caribbean

The beautiful beaches, fantastic weather, friendly locals and a rich history, means the Caribbean has something for everyone and this makes it a great cruise destination for first-time cruisers.

Like sparkling jewels in turquoise seas, the islands of the Caribbean offer endless beauty and charm.  Each island has a culture and personality of its own.  You can sunbathe on a beach, snorkel in crystal clear waters or enjoy world class shopping and gourmet dining.  There are several Caribbean cruise itineraries for you to choose from with lines sailing to more than 20 stunning Caribbean destinations.  From the natural wonders of St Lucia to the splendor of Aruba, to the romance of St Thomas and St Maarten or the relaxation of Grand Cayman, there is an island to suit all tastes.

Many cruise lines have even invested in their own private islands in the Caribbean. These islands are owned or leased by the cruise lines and are for the exclusive use of their guests for the day.

Caribbean cruises commonly start from the major port hubs of Miami and Fort Lauderdale with a few starting from Galveston, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana.  There are however, some lines that sail direct from the UK in a transatlantic crossing.

Best time to go

You can cruise to the Caribbean all year round. The summer months and Christmas and Easter are peak times. The best time to go to the Caribbean is in the summer for the warmest temperatures and mild seas. However, thanks to the Caribbean’s tropical climate, you are guaranteed warmth and sunshine no matter when you visit. Winter is a great time to visit the Caribbean because temperatures still remain pleasant. 1 June to 30 November is the official Caribbean Atlantic hurricane season, though the most active months are usually August and September.

Weather

The Caribbean Islands enjoy warm sunny winters with afternoon temperatures averaging 29 °C (84 °F). Thundery showers can occur in the late afternoon or evening. Spring sees the start of the rainy season and around 22 dry days are typical. Nine or ten hours of sunshine can be expected and typical maximum temperatures are around 30 - 31 °C (86-88 °F). In the summer months, hurricanes can hit the Caribbean, although Trinidad & Tobago and the Bahamas are rarely affected but it can happen. The summers are hot and wet with daily average maximum temperatures reaching 32 °C (89 °F) and up to 10 hours of sunshine are normal. The official hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Tropical storms can still occur in the autumn months, but rarely after mid-October. Temperatures start to cool slightly in November to around 29 °C (84 °F) and 15 - 17 dry days can be expected each month with 8-9 hours of sunshine.

Key Ports

St Johns (Antigua), Basseterre (St Kitts), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Cozumel (Mexico), Philipsburg (St Maarten), Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas), George Town (Grand Cayman), Nassau (Bahamas), Oranjestadt (Aruba), Bridgetown (Barbados), Ocho Rios (Jamaica), Castries (St Lucia)

Shore Excursions Ideas

Bobsled with Dunn's River Falls Combo, Thriller Jet Boat and Beach, Mayan Ruins of Tulum, Exclusive Bob Marley Reggae Tour, Barbados Harrisons Cave Tour, horseback riding in the sea

Language

English is the national language across the Caribbean. French, Spanish and Dutch are also spoken on some of the islands which reflects their colonial divides.

Currency

US dollars are widely accepted on most islands, so there is no need to take the various local currencies. Cash machines will usually issue only the local currency. Local dollar denominations are present across the Caribbean. Barbados uses its own dollar, and St Lucia and Grenada use the East Caribbean dollar, but do ask what type of dollar a price is being quoted in if it’s not clear. Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are both U.S. territories and therefore use the U.S. dollar as the legal tender.
